Sustainable Development Goal 12

BLOKHUS Natur Camping

Responsible Consumption and Production

We take the responsibility for our own and the guests’ consumption very seriously and precisely for this reason we make a lot of different efforts related to this Sustainable Development Goal.

Recycling

Recycling is one of our main concerns and we try to recycle as much as possible. Cloths and mops used for cleaning are washed and reused until they are worn-down. Discarded furniture is recycled elsewhere in our business as often as possible, and if we cannot use it ourselves, we make sure to donate it to thrift shops so others can enjoy it. Furthermore, several of the accommodation types at Blokhus Natur Camping actually are recycled. The log cabins previously have functioned as camping cabins on site and our Nature Sheds are old cabins bought at another campsite. We also recycle old flagstones to create new and better outdoor areas.

In connection with recycling we also sort our waste, this applies for both the company and the guests who have the possibility to sort their waste on designated waste areas. The waste sorting is divided into general waste, paper, cardboard, iron and metal, cans, glass, and plastic. Unfortunately, we have experienced that some guests do not sort their waste and therefore, in the future, we will be developing the waste areas, signage and information material about waste sorting and the advantages of sorting the waste. Our trade association is working on waste systems that will make it easier for our guests to sort their waste.

Sustainable building materials
When we are rebuilding, renovating or building something new, we always use environmentally friendly materials. We plan to build cabins, wood tents and firecabins, all of which we are going to build with sustainable and durable wood types. Due to the durability we can avoid using impregnated wood which are often treated with harmful chemicals. Moreover, the new service building will have a cladding made of Kebony. Kebony wood has the FSC certification and furthermore it is impregnated with a biobased fluid to give it a long durability. Because Kebony wood is impregnated with a biobased fluid it also has the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

Paper consumption
In the name of sustainability we work to reduce our paper consumption and make the consumption more environmentally friendly. For example, this involves having introduced a paper free politic related to bookings and newsletters, so the guests only receive their confirmations and additional information by email. Furthermore, we have started a cooperation with DigitalGuest, so our guests receive an email 5 days before arrival with information about both their unit, the campsite, and the area. This way we are able to save a lot of paper that the guests otherwise would be given at check-in. Other than that, we use unbleached paper, both toilet paper and paper towels. This means that it has not been chemically treated and therefore it is less environmentally polluting.

Floor mats
We use floor mats many places on site: in the reception, in the office, in our service buildings, in the kitchen, and in the living room. Thus, we have a large consumption of floor mats, among other to ease the cleaning, and therefore it is important for us that this consumption is sustainable. For this reason, we are happy to say that our floor mats are part of a sustainable lifecycle at Berendsen. They regularly change our floor mats throughout the season, and the dirty mats are washed with their Nordic Swan Ecolabelled process so they can be reused afterwards.

Cleaning
It is not only our floor mats that are reused as this also applies to our cloths and mops which we wash with allergy friendly detergent from Neutral before they are used again. Furthermore, most our cleaning agents are free from harmful chemicals since they are labelled with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, and in the future, we strive to make this apply for all of our cleaning agents.

Food and food waste
It is important for us that both our own and the guests’ consumption of food is responsible. Therefore, the kiosk has sustainable, local, and organic groceries, and we are very focused on reducing food waste. Read more about this effort under Sustainable Development Goal 2.
